THE 2014 BRITISH COLUMBIA WINE AWARDS

HISTORY & SPONSORS

Welcome to the 2014 British Columbia Wine Awards – the premier British Columbia wine judging competition that recognizes the excellence in winemaking for all British Columbia wineries.  The British Columbia Wine Awards are generously sponsored by Farm Credit Canada, ContainerWorld, Grant Thornton and TricorBraun Winepak.  These awards offer our British Columbia wine industry the opportunity to have their wines judged by 9 of the most respected wine judges from across North America and be awarded medals of excellence and be recognized in a comprehensive public relations and sales campaign organized by the Okanagan Wine Festivals.

OUR  JUDGES

Our 9 eminent judges this year include the following:

  • Sid Cross, Vancouver
  • Doug Frost, Kansas City
  • DJ Kearney, Vancouver
  • Kurtis  Kolt, Vancouver
  • David Lawrason, Toronto
  • Darren Oleksyn, Calgary
  • Tim Pawsey, Vancouver
  • Troy Townsin, Victoria
  • Stephanie Yuen, Vancouver

Meet the Judges

THE AWARDS

The medal structure has been revised for 2014. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded as has been the traditional practice. This year we are introducing two new awards - Platinum medals and the Premier’s Wine Award.

Platinum medals will be awarded to a wine that is judged unanimously to be good enough to be Gold by all 9 Judges. The Platinum medals will help to showcase the varietals and blends that distinguish our wine region.  Our other new award is the Premier's Wine Award. From all Platinum medals, the judges will meet and based on consensus, the best wine in British Columbia will be named the Premier's Wine and will be presented by our Premier.  All awards will be handed out at the British Columbia Wine Awards Reception & Tasting on Wednesday, October 1 from 7pm-9pm at the Laurel Heritage Packinghouse in Kelowna. This is a public event.  Each Member Winery will receive two tickets to attend and if a member winery wishes to buy more tickets, they may be purchased at www.selectyourtickets.com or call 250 717-5304.

WHY ENTER?

  1. This is the oldest British Columbia wine competition.

  5. Results are posted immediately online at www.thewinefestivals.com  - the BC wine industry’s lead website for wine tourism.
  6. Bottle shots, winner’s names, and judge’s comments will be published in our Okanagan Wine Festivals e-flipbook and distributed to our extensive media and consumer base.
  7. Results published in community newspapers in BC including – Okanagan Sunday, Kamloops Daily News, Business in Vancouver, the Victoria Times Columnist and other community newspapers in Vancouver.
  8. Results available in BC Liquor Stores in the Interior.
  9. Electronic posters of winners will be distributed to all BC VQA wine stores and to over 500 BC LRS stores.
